A child with brown hair and a white shirt looking at a smartphone, appearing surprised or concerned.

NSPCC was looking to update one of the key resources they use in their in-school workshops, an animated video to help children 5-11 recognise forms of abuse and how to ask for help.

Their original illustrated video was starting to feel dated, so we worked with the brilliant team at Fred and Eric to bring it up to date with modern technology (e.g. replacing landlines with mobile phones), as well as giving it a more modern look to make sure it felt engaging and fresh to the viewer.

An animated person lying in bed and talking on a phone, with a remote control, a game controller, and a pair of socks on the floor beside the bed.

From the start, we knew the video was not going to have any supporting VO, so it was important that the visuals themselves could carry the entire narrative and convey the story clearly and effectively on their own.

We focused on creating a strong visual language to clearly communicate our main character's feelings through subtle facial expressions and body language, as well as environments that could on their own tell the story of his lived experience and background.

A person lying on a bed in a small, cluttered room, using a phone with a bright light illuminating their face, with closed curtains, a soccer ball, shoes, and a backpack on the floor.

We made use of compositions with strong, exaggerated perspectives, especially in the first half of the video, which we paired with a muted palette to help convey a sense of drama and isolation.

As the story moves forward, the visuals gets brighter and much more colourful, marking the point when Guy realises he can get help and that things can improve.
The use of subtle gradients and textures throughout the piece helped in further grounding the illustrations and making them feel more real.

We’ve been lucky enough to work on numerous projects for NSPCC in the past.
